The
new Domestic Fowl Trust Visitor Centre and Museum
It took over
36 months of planning and 8 months building work since securing
planning permissions and DEFRA funding to develop
the domestic fowl visitor centre and museum at The Domestic Fowl Trust in
Honeybourne just outside of Evesham, Worcestershire. The creation of this innovative
traditional museum and farm park for rare breed poultry and farm animals is yet another example of the need for local
farms to diversify.
The Domestic Fowl Trust's visitor centre and rare breed farm park is run by an energetic and experienced
team and has been backed by DEFRA’s Rural Enterprise Scheme
to help increase public awareness of poultry and the history of domestic fowl. The
museum consists of displays ranging from old incubators to vermin
control devices. The farm parks 20 acres behind the centre houses various types of domestic fowl, including various chicken breeds, ducks, geese, turkeys bantams and rare breed farm
animals. There are indoor and outdoor play areas for the children
and the new Speckled Hen Tea room in which to relax throughout the year. There
is also an extensive on-site shop which a full range of chicken houses, poultry supplies and books - everything you need for raising chickens and keeping
domestic fowl.
This exciting and demanding project was the brain child of Mrs
Bernedette Landshoff who decided to embark on the extensive
enlargement back in 2000 because she wished to increase public
awareness of poultry. Her aim was to "create somewhere people can bring their
children to learn all about chickens in a fun atmosphere” The new Domestic Fowl Trust visitor centre and museum was opened on 8th April 2006.· An educational visitor centre, museum and farm park, it
will encourage rural and tourist spending boosting our local worcestershire
economy. It has also helped the creation of jobs within the local community as
well as using local companies to provide services.· Social benefits – The Domestic Fowl Trust’s
shared philosophy is about education and enrichment of life
and we seek to contribute towards this by developing our
educational visitor centre which will provide tours to the public
and members alike.
