Dried calciworms are the larvae of the black soldier fly (hermetia illucens). They contain around 50 times more calcium than other insects or worms, making them an excellent supplement. Calcium is crucial for maintaining a strong skeletal system, for egg development, muscle contraction, nerve impulses, and a host of other important metabolic systems. They also aid the absorption of phosphorus, another vital mineral for the birds in your garden, and they are high in protein and fat, making them very nutritious and palatable. Dried calciworms should be fed all year round, particularly in winter and spring, during nesting season.
